Cd, Hg, Pb emissions to the air

Key message
For most of HELCOM countries the emissions are lower in 2000 in comparison to1996.
Assessment
The document presents the information on anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals (Cd, Hg, Pb) from HELCOM countries during 1996-2000.
Maps with time-series of annual total cadmoum (Cd) and lead (Pb) emissions of HELCOM countries are shown on Figures 1 and 2.
Time-series are based on available official data and expert estimates for the period 1996-2000. In case of absence of official information available data for other years were used. For instance, for Germany emissions were estimated using linear interpolation between the official data for 1995 and the projections for 2010. Cadmium and mercury emissions of Latvia for 1999 and 2000 were not available therefore for these years the values of 1998 were taken. HM emissions of Lithuania in 2000 were assumed to be equal to the level of previous 1999 since there was also no available official information for this year. Emissions from Sweden in 1996 were estimated using linear interpolation between the data for 1995 and 1997. It should be mentioned also that information on emissions of Sweden for 1997-2000 is incomplete since not all of groups of sources were taken into account in the emission inventory.
Results
Annual emissions of heavy metals in the HELCOM countries decreased during the period 1996-2000, by 26% for cadmium and 10% for lead. These figures should be considered with some caution, however, because emission trends over this period were far from clear for most countries.
Although the overall decline in cadmium emissions was mostly due to a 50% reduction in emissions in Poland it remained the largest source of cadmium emissions among the HELCOM countries, followed by Russia and Germany.
