Assessment: Baltic Sea winter/summer average (BalEco™ model)

The average of wintertime (January-February) surface layer nutrient concentrations are presented in Fig. 12 (DIP left and DIN right). Highest DIP values are in Golf of Finland (up to 0.8) and Arkona and Bornholm Basins (up to 0.6). Highest DIN values are in Golf of Finland and Bothnian Bay.

The nutrient ratios are presented in Fig. 13. The DIN/DIP ratio exceed the HELCOM reference in Northern Golf of Finland and Bothnian Sea and Bay. DIN/silicate ratio is exceeded only in the Northern Gulf of Finland.

The average of summertime (June-September) surface layer Chlorophyll a concentrations were highest in the Arkona -, Bornholm Basin, Shout East Gotland Basin, Gdansk Deep and on the entrance and in the Gulf of Finland. The Bothnian Bay was the only location where the 1 mg m-3 was not exceeded (in Fig. 14).
