In order to protect biodiversity BASE contributes to the network of the Baltic Sea Protected Areas (BSPAs). In particular, BASE supports the establishment of a marine protected zone as an extension of the Curonian Spit National Park in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia.

Promotion of biological diversity of ecosystems (terrestrial, marine and aquatic) also involves the protection of genetic diversity. The development of a management plan for the wild salmon population in the Luga River contributes to the preservation of the spawning sites of the most crucial river for the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea to sustain a wild salmon population.

Biodiversity is directly dependent on anthropogenic activities (Eutrophication, Hazardous Substances) and the complex interrelation is being addressed by BASE. Regulation of human activities is the key to preserving biodiversity, including the development of management plans for Hot Spots - the Curonian and Vistula lagoons.
