Traineeship in the HELCOM Secretariat:

work with web pages & photos

What is HELCOM?

HELCOM is an intergovernmental organization (Denmark, Estonia, the European Union, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden) with its headquarters in Helsinki, working since 1974 to protect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. At present there are about 25 staff members at the HELCOM Secretariat. The working language is English. We offer an open, friendly and energetic working environment.

What are we doing at the moment?

HELCOM is working on the Second Holistic Assessment of the Ecosystem Health of the Baltic Sea (HOLAS II). Applying the most recent and innovative approaches and tools, this assessment is a continuation to the initial holistic assessment, published in 2010. In addition to results on ecosystem health, the assessment will cover a general description of the Baltic Sea, key human activities that impact the environment, discussion of measures to improve the situation, as well as study methods, process, background, etc. One of the products of the project will be a website for accessing the assessment results and for promoting and sharing these results. The initial results will be made public by the end of June 2017.

What are we offering?

Would you like to join the HELCOM Secretariat for a period of two to four months for a traineeship and help us in this effort? Your main tasks would be related to editing content for the HOLAS II website, creating a photo library and preparing communication material. In addition you would have the chance to get acquainted with the full range of HELCOM activities by assisting in general supportive and administrative tasks of the Secretariat.

The exact dates and duration of the traineeship can be negotiated, but we would like you to start working with us as soon as possible, already in May. Unless you happen to have a grant, we will be able to pay you a modest salary.

What do we want from you?

You need to have a suitable educational background and good communication and drafting skills in English. It is equally important to have good IT knowledge and skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, preferably also WordPress, SharePoint, Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign, basic familiarity with programming). Experience with editing content for web is a plus. We would also appreciate attention to detail and an eye for visual presentation. You should be able to work independently but also as a positive team member. Some previous working experience would be appreciated. We also expect you to demonstrate an interest in the environment and the Baltic Sea.

How to apply?

If you feel you have the qualities we are looking for, please send your application (a short motivation letter and CV) in English via e-mail to Administrative Officer Satu Raisamo ( at the latest on Tuesday, 2 May 2017.
