Textual description

Baltic bottoms in the photic zone with more than 10 %, but less than 90 % coverage of both hard and soft substrata. Perennial algae cover at least 10 % of the seabed and more than other perennial attached erect groups. Out of the perennial attached algae, Fucus spp. constitutesat least 50 % of the biovolume.

Physical environment

Salinity range: >4.5 psu; Exposure range: low to moderately high; Depth range: photic zone from about 0.5 to 5 meters and deeper in clear waters.

Characteristic species

Fucus vesiculosus, F. radicans, F. serratus maritimus

QUALITY DESCRIPTORS

Lower limit of Fucus belt, amount of epiphytic algae, density of Fucus
