BALSAM - Background information

BALSAM was a Pilot Project for enhancing the capacity of the Baltic Sea Member States to develop their monitoring programmes. The project started on 1 October 2013 and ran until the end of May 2015. It consisted of 6 Work Packages (WP).

The project contributed to the implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requirements concerning coordinated monitoring of marine environment in the Baltic.

BALSAM also contributed to the revision of HELCOM's coordinated monitoring system that was initiated in the HELCOM Monitoring and Assessment Strategy, and specifically to the development of the online monitoring manual for the Baltic Sea, which was published on 15 October 2014.
