Assessment and quantification of nutrient loads to the Baltic Sea from Leningrad Oblast and transboundary rivers, and the evaluation of their sources.

This component of the BASE project aims to assess the nutrient load to Baltic Sea originating from the Russian catchment area (Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions), including Russian transboundary loads. In addition, pollution sources of hazardous substances are sampled in the Pregolya river catchment in Kaliningrad region.

This assessment will be based on the results of BASE project's sampling works in the Neva catchment area and in all Kaliningrad region watercourses and other on-going activities on monitoring in these regions. Moreover, this assessment will include results of the BASE project desk studies on quantifications of Russian tranboundary loads.

This activity is an important contribution for enhancing reporting by Russia to HELCOM Pollution Load Compilations (PLCs). Nutrients are being monitored in previously little or unmonitored tributaries to the Neva and Pregolya rivers (Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions). In addition, some of the HELCOM priority list hazardous substances typical for this area, heavy metals and oil will be monitored in the Pregolya river. The activity includes a capacity building aspect. Joint sampling and intercalibration activities are necessary to ensure the validity of the activity.

Sampling in the Neva river basin is being carried out by Federal budget state authority "North-West Department of Hydrometeorology Service" (HYDROMET) and Pöyry Finland. Sampling in the Pregolya basin is being carried out by the Baltic Institute for Ecology of Hydrosphere and Pöyry Finland.
