Global single-hull oil tanker ban enters force
Environment Daily 1852, 05/04/05
A global ban on single-hulled oil tankers entered force on 5 April 2005, the International maritime organisation (IMO) has announced. The ban was originally agreed in 1992, but its compliance date was brought forward in 2003 after high-profile accidents in EU waters.
Greenpeace welcomed the ban's entry-into-force but accused the EU of failing to prepare for the disposal of waste ships. The matter now needed "proper follow up so that the problem is not simply exported to vulnerable workers in developing world shipbreaking yards".
