Commission mulls new EU maritime policy
Environment Daily 1832, 02/03/05
The European Commission announced on Wednesday (02.03.05) preparations for a wide-reaching new EU maritime policy to cover fields ranging from resource use, fishing, transport and tourism. NGO Greenpeace warned that the plan might duplicate, and perhaps sideline, a marine environment strategy due from the Commission this summer.
But fisheries commissioner Joe Borg's office said that the marine environment strategy would be "a very important component" of any future maritime policy: "The last thing we want is duplication or competing policies".
