St. Petersburg to host the VI International Environmental Forum “Baltic Sea Day”

BSD.JPGSt. Petersburg, on 22-23 March, will host the VI International Environmental Forum “Baltic Sea Day”. It is actively supported by the Ministry of National Resources of the Russian Federation, the governments of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, as well as the Baltic Sea countries.

This annual forum, which has been held in St. Petersburg since 2000, has already become one of the mechanisms for enhancing the cooperation of the Baltic Sea countries. It focuses on the ecological status and protection of the Baltic Sea and also popularises the activities of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (or HELCOM), which is an intergovernmental organisation of the Baltic Sea coastal countries.

This year the programme includes plenary and sectional sessions (round tables) on a wide range of topics, including the trilateral cooperation in the Gulf of Finland, the strategy for data collection on hazardous substances in Russia, the European Marine Strategy and the EU Water Framework Directive, as well as the status of the environmental “hot spots” in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

It is expected that representatives of governments, scientific institutes and public organisations from all the Baltic Sea countries will participate in the Forum. Last year more than 450 participants from all over the region and also from USA, Norway, Holland, Belgium and the UK took part in the event.
