ECHA proposes seven new SVHC chemicals

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) along with Belgium, France and Denmark have proposed adding seven chemicals to a list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) that could eventually be severely restricted in the EU.

A consultation launched on Monday will run until 7 April. All seven substances are carcinogenic or toxic for reproduction. These include strontium chromate, hydrazine, 2-ethoxyethyl acetate and 1,2,3-trichloropropane. Member states must give their approval before the chemicals' inclusion in the so-called candidate list.

ECHA has also proposed that the classification of cobalt dichloride, already on the candidate list, be revised to reflect its new classification as a carcinogenic and reprotoxic chemical. It was previously classified only as carcinogenic.

Companies using chemicals on the SVHC list are obliged to provide information about their use when requested by the public. There are currently 46 substances on the list.
