Where do pollutants come from and how do they end up in the sea? How can we control them - is it cheaper to substitute them with less hazardous ones or install treatment equipment? Are we fully aware of the complexity of these tasks?

The COHIBA project (www.cohiba-project.net) has identified the most significant sources, uses and pathways of various hazardous substances of specific concern for the Baltic marine environment. The Project inventoried available ways to cope with the flows of hazardous substances and highlighted the most cost-efficient - both end-of-pipe and source reduction measures. This knowledge is ready to be utilised in the Baltic Sea Region and the COHIBA team is ready to share it.

The COHIBA Project complements the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan (2007–2021), in which all the nine contracting Baltic States are committed to significantly reducing hazardous substances in the Baltic Sea to reach its good environmental status by 2021.
