Speakers announced for the HELCOM-BONUS Stakeholder Conference

The Sixth HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan Stakeholder Conference and the Third BONUS Forum will address the future research needs of the Baltic Sea. Policymakers, funders, science community and others with a stake in the sustainable management action in the Baltic Sea region are welcomed to the Scandic Marina Congress Center, Helsinki, Finland, on Monday 4 March 2013.

 

The day will take a considered view of defining and clarifying the importance of the research, solutions based knowledge and their societal impact in restoring good environmental status of the Baltic Sea. Another important topic of the day concerns achieving sustainability of the use of the goods and services provided by this fragile marine ecosystem.

 

During the session ‘From science & technology to well-informed decisions’ Mr. Andrea Tilche, Acting Director, Environmental Research, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission will provide an overview of the broader societal impact of the EU research and innovation framework programmes.

 

Mr. Fredrik Wulff, Senior advisor, Baltic Nest Institute, Resilience Centre, University of Stockholm, Sweden will discuss what we can – and cannot – expect science to deliver for the environmental policy action in the Baltic Sea region.

 

Mr. Jesper Andersen, Chief consultant, Bioscience - marine ecology, Århus University, Denmark will outline a perspective to what it takes to move towards ecosystem-based management of the Baltic Sea and connect science, policy and society.

 

Mr. Raine Hermans, Director, Strategic intelligence, Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation will present critical view on the societal impact of innovation with a purpose.

 

The speakers will be joined in the panel discussion by Ms. Anna-Stiina Heiskanen, Research Programme for the Protection of the Baltic Sea, Finnish Environment Institute, Mr. Jacek Zaucha, Maritime Institute in Gdansk, and Mr. Boris Chubarenko, Atlantic Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences.

 

The key note addresses of the high-level segment as well as the more detailed outline of the afternoon session of closer encounters will be announced shortly.
