Map projection and datum Map projection: LKS_1992_Latvia (Transverse Mercator, False Easting 500000, False Northing -6000000, Central Meridian 24° E, Scale Factor .9996, Latitude of Origin 0°, linear unit meter) Datum: D_Latvia_1992 Modelling method Presence/absence of Furcellaria stands (defined as Furcellaria coverage &gt; 20 %) was modelled by a series of generalized additive models (GAM). The best factor/smooth function combination according to R2, AIC, counts of true and false positive and negative classifications was achieved by a function of the factors sand coverage (?20 %/&gt;20 %) and boulder presence combined with smooth functions of depth and wave energy, using a logit link function. Furcellaria stands ~ sand coverage + boulder presence + s(depth) + s(wave energy), link = logit R2 = .54 Amount/density of underlying measurements (field data) The model was calibrated by detailed video survey information on Furcellaria coverage and sediment type along a 35 km long coastal strip (model calibration area) between the Lithuanian/Latvian border and the Bern?ti village south of Liep?ja. The video survey was conducted during July/August 2006 at 566 stations on a regular grid, with 400 m distance between the observation sites. At each site 5 - 50 m2 of bottom area were surveyed, depending on bottom and habitat complexity. Macroalgae and bottom sediment coverage were extracted from the video sequences on a semi-quantitative scale. Wave energy was not measured in the field but approximated by the 95 % percentile of squared orbital wave velocity at the seafloor generated by a wave model of the Latvian Baltic Proper coast for the year 2005 (Se??ikovs et al. 2007) Validation method applied and results of the validation procedure Within the model calibration area, the GAM model correctly classified 90 % of the sampling sites (94 % of Furcellaria stand absences and 75 % of presences). Model performance in a simple cross-validation experiment setting aside 30 % of the sampling sites was excellent, with 88 % of the validation sites classified correctly (93 % of absences and 70 % of presences. Prediction layers used to derive the file For the model calibration area (grid Furcellaria_detailed) water depth and sediment type were taken from the video survey data. The extrapolation to the entire coastline (grid Furcellaria_extrapolated) is based on depth data provided by the Latvian Hydrographic Service and lithological information from a schematic map of coastline morphology (Ulsts and Bulgakova 1998). Compared to the fine mosaic of sandy and rocky bottoms documented in the video survey of the model calibration area, the lithological map was rather schematic. For example, the video observations documented boulders throughout the model calibration area, whereas the lithological map depicted boulders only in the southern tip of the model calibration region. Unfortunately, the GAM model predictions are very sensitive to the underlying sediment data because the model factor combination generates occurrence probabilities &gt; 0.5 only at sites with boulder presence. Nevertheless, the general pattern of a patchy Furcellaria stand distribution shown by the model agrees well with field observations along the coast (e.g. Korolev and Fetter2000, 2004).
